Wege aus dem Bauhaus.Gerhard Marcks und sein Freundeskreis

Oskar Schlemmer created this abstract figure in the years from 1921 to 23. It is done in nickel-plated bronze, the shining surface reflects the light and so achieves an affected of brilliance. The main theme in Schlemmer’s art is the representation of human figures. He composes the sculpture by combining various geometrical forms. The absence of certain elements such as arms and legs does not detract from its overall affect as a figure. Together with the long extended plinth it forms a finally balanced unity. In 1924 the artist notes: „The figure is not to be grasped in one moment. It needs a temporal sequence of position and line of vision. A coercion to move around arises, and only by walking around and the sum of the impression so gained, can one really grasp the sculpture. The different positions and angles of the variety of visual experiences, the sum of these experiences yields the overall view of the figure. Oskar Schlemmer made numerous paintings and also wall-paintings devoted to the theme of man. Running the stage class at the Bauhaus he worked a lot on stage illustrations and design costumes for his Triadic Ballet.
