Walls Talk

Walls Talk

Julian Göthe’s Walls Talk (2005) was made together with Antje Stöffler-Hamad, originally being part of a wall sculpture. This feature-length work in black-and-white combines opulent imagery and sounds in a condensed use of key elements of Göthe’s artistic practice, including his interest in stage design, interiors and décor, as well as historical depiction and classical Hollywood cinema. Göthe’s faible for functional music is also evident here, as its unexpected genealogy and complexity develop a quality of their own when combined with the images. The slow camera movements exploring the individual pictures—as symbolized in the overlapping Spirograph animation—permit a close reading that often reveals unforeseen details. This very sensual approach corresponds with Göthe‘s notion of a “space of longing,” which becomes atmospheric and perceptible here.
