About mumok
mumok is one of Europe’s largest and leading museums featuring art produced since the advent of modernity, which it collects, explores, and exhibits to a wide art-loving audience.
Located in Central Europe, it acts as a bridge between East and West and, being an internationally oriented museum, connects the local and global art scenes.
mumok presents art history and the present as vital, socially relevant processes. In addition to such renowned stars as Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Maria Lassnig, and Cosima von Bonin, the presentation of the collection and special exhibitions recognizes the significance of previously undiscovered and emerging artists as well as new art forms. In doing so, past and present, tradition and experiment are brought together.
The building’s striking blocks of dark-gray basalt in the midst of Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier house an exceptional collection featuring major works of classical modernism, Pop Art, Fluxus, Conceptual Art, and Vienna Actionism all the way through to topical, modern art with its film and media references. In addition to film screenings, the mumok cinema also holds lectures and discussions that elucidate the informative reciprocal relations between film and visual art. The wide-ranging art education program for all those over the age of four, as well as the library, café, and mumok shop, rounds off the extensive services offered to all our visitors.
