HOUSE Painting the Glass House: Artists Revisit Modern Architecture

Dorit Margreiter’s film presents a house: a fantastic, modernistic home built by American architect John Lautner in Los Angeles in 1963. Using a fixed camera the film shows the architecture as mobile: fittings of glass and concrete in dynamic forms, windows which disappear into the floor, a television set that appears to emerge from a solid block of concrete, huge glass partitions with fantastic views. One might believe that the vocabulary of this modern piece of architecture is intended to be understood as an apposite expression of a forward-looking American society. Quite the contrary—the ideal US American home embodies cosy suburban romanticism. The lack of that in Lautner’s architecture, its self-initiated movement that appears to suspend the laws of gravity, makes the house into a perfect location for a feature film. Although it is only the baddies who ever live here. The Cohen brothers, for example, shot scenes for their film “The Big Lebowski” here. Dorit Margreiter has the Toxic Titties band perform in this clean and sterile staging of modernist living. This women’s art collective occupies the house with a shrill performance, well and truly mixing up the artist’s documentary film about it. This parodistic appropriation undermines the conventional differentiation between documentation and fiction and, equally, the clichéd idea of the psychological effect of architecture as it is guided and determined by the mass media.
