In this series of photographs, the artist stages a simulation of the act of giving birth. He sits on a chair in a dark room; the camera shows parts of his naked body from various perspectives. A baked pastry, braided into something resembling a knot, functions as a prop that stands in for ovaries, the umbilical cord, even the newborn baby. The process of giving birth can be understood in a political sense as well: in the particular context of Romania at the time, Grigorescu’s performance has also been seen as a critical response to the power-hungry “deliverer” of the political system, the head of state Nicolae Ceau?escu.
