The Strait of Gibraltar is the place that like no other marks the line separating the rich North from the poor South. The strait becomes a challenge for thousands of Africans each year to risk the dangerous leap to a better life. With a series of photographs, Yto Barrada documents the state of waiting and expectation that more and more dominates Morocco, especially her hometown Tangiers. The photographs refuse any dramatics, instead tracing out moments of an everyday life that is marked by completed, intended, and blocked migration, and relate these moments to tourism as a contrasting form of mobility.
