fin, pero no es el fin (the end but not the end): meditations on race, radical rhythms
film evening curated by william cordova
In his short films from the last twenty years, william cordova combines audio and video fragments from music events and instances of political activism to create dialectical scenes of civil disobedience and subcultural rebellion. For this program, the artist pairs examples of his own cinematic work with films by the Cuban director Nicolás Guillén Landrián’s (1938–2003) contribution to Third Cinema as avant-garde night school.
Program
Nicolás Guillén Landrián, En un Barrio Viejo, 1963, 9 min

Presented by william cordova, afterwards conversation with Christian Kravagna (in English)
william cordova (b. 1969 in Lima, Peru, lives in New York and Miami, USA) is an interdisciplinary cultural practitioner interested in the roots of abstraction, the history of textile encoding, and non-linear narratives. He illuminates the synthesis of memory, ritual, and mythology to further disrupt, challenge and reassess definitions of our collective landscape. Intersecting the economy of materials with ephemeral and spatial rhythms, his site-specific installation work is both expansive and intimate.
Christian Kravagna is the curator of the exhibition Avant-Garde and Liberation. Contemporary Art and Decolonial Modernism (co-curator: Matthias Michalka) and professor of Postcolonial Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
The program takes place in the context of the exhibition Avant-Garde and Liberation. Contemporary Art and Decolonial Modernism, on view June 7 until September 22, 2024 at mumok.
