“a room with a view in the financial district” was made in 2001 in New York’s World Trade Center, the now destroyed symbol of Western capitalism. The static images that Carola Dertnig took in these buildings stand in crass opposition to the glamour, self-confidence, and superiority for which these towers stood in the public imagination. Empty, quickly abandoned office units with half-eaten food, worn-down interior furnishings, decayed floors, and many other symptoms of dissolution mix with sporadic views of the skyline of Manhattan. Dertnig had passed through this imaginary center of economic profit maximization as part of an artist-in-residence program for woman artists, with a studio in the World Trade Center. Herself integrated in the profit efficiency logic of these towers and the system they represented, Dertnig combined her ambivalent shots from inside of this capitalist architecture with a subjective voice over, rich in associations, on the economy of artistic production as well as moments of control and freedom in her own work.
