“nominated . . .” Vordemberge-Gildewart Award 2022

Each year, the Vordemberge-Gildewart Foundation awards a grant worth 60,000 Swiss francs (about 58,000 euros) to support an artist under the age of 35. The Vordemberge-Gildewart Award is thus the highest-paying award for young talent in Europe. In line with the philosophy of Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart, the prize money is not subject to any conditions.

Jury Statement:
“In her two-part installation, Refusing to Meet Your Eye from 2022, consisting of a single-channel video and a collection of documents, Huda Takriti guides us through a maelstrom of archival images from 1969. The jumping-off point of her in-depth research was the first airplane hijacking ever to be led by a woman. What was remarkable about it was that the hijacker had hired a photographer to document the detonation of the empty passenger plane, which had been rerouted to Damascus, for archival purposes. As the photographer forgot to take off his camera’s lens cap, the result was one black photograph. Thus, the incident remained unrecorded.

In a formally precise manner, Huda Takriti blends the collected research material on the incident with other documents from the eventful year of 1969 to create a dense, highly topical reflection on the power of images and the process of truth production. [...] ”

Huda Takriti born 1990 in Damascus, Syria, lives and works in Vienna.
She studied Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Damaskus University, Syria and TransArts, at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
