Lecture: Will and Facility: Creative learning as a principle

Benedikt Hochwartner's lecture outlines how applied creative learning based on art collections can lead to holistic education. Museums are places of education that must grow with the demands of society. Proactive learning, that is practice based on different methods goes far beyond workshops or classroom situations. Dynamic and interactive experiences begin with a solid team: it is only through willingness and ability that potentials arise, that go beyond traditional educational boundaries and bring about profound social change.

Benedikt Hochwartner is Curator for Creative Learning at mumok. He has been shaping the area of digital mediation since 2018 and is responsible for the museum's educational focus on creative learning. His development of transdisciplinary learning systems is based, among other things, on his studies of ancient history and classical double bass as well as his professional experience in field surveying at the Federal Bureau of Surveying and Measurements, and as Program Director for Minddance LLC, for which he designed and managed digital education programs in the USA and Austria.

Panel talk: What the students and teachers say: First-hand narrative

Experience an exciting panel talk in which Anja Freiler, the project-leading educator of muco - mumok community, together with Lena Arends, education manager at mumok and Benedikt Hochwartner, will provide a look behind the scenes of the teaching processes during the project semesters. She will give a lively account of how the students reacted to the innovative methods and creative challenges. You can look forward to entertaining anecdotes from everyday teaching that show how young learners have surpassed themselves in unexpected ways. The talk not only offers insights into the implementation of the project, but also inspiration on how creative approaches can be integrated into everyday school life. A must for anyone who is interested in modern educational concepts and wants to find out how cultural education can be successfully taught in a school context.

Moderated dialog: Art and media literacy: New paths to digital literacy

How can art & media education go hand in hand to promote a reflective, open society? Christoph Kaindel sheds light on the creative and political dimension of media education and its importance for young people to find their identity. Benedikt Hochwartner explains how art, in all its complexity, dissolves categories and thus becomes an open learning space for the difficulties of today's information landscape.

In a moderated dialog, they show how a collaboration between art and media education contributes to the future of education!

Christoph Kaindel is a member of the media education team at the Vienna Education Server. He coordinates the student radio project Wiener Radiobande and holds workshops on the topics of coding, AI and game-based learning. He studied history in Vienna, was a graphic designer and illustrator and has worked in youth research.

Talk: Designing for Creative Play: Banana Pianos, Rhyming Limes and beyond

Join Eric Rosenbaum, a pioneer in playful learning technology and Director of Scratch Lab, for a talk and Q&A session. He will share the creative learning philosophy of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab and how it has shaped the Scratch programming language and community. He will share about his journey from co-inventing the Makey Makey invention kit, to tinkering with music and creating playful synaesthetic apps, to exploring creative possibilities with AI and Scratch. - Talk and Q & A in English!

As Director of Scratch Lab, Eric Rosenbaum explores new creative possibilities for the future of Scratch. He is the co-inventor of the Makey Makey invention kit, and creator of Beetleblocks, Singing Fingers, Glowdoodle, and other playful tools. He completed his PhD at MIT Media Lab with Mitch Resnick on "Explorations in Musical Tinkering."

Workshop: Math in Flow: Dancing from Fear to Joy

Workshop with art, the computer language Scratch and the invention kit Makey Makey

Are you afraid of math? Do you want to conquer your fear of math? Our interactive Makey Makey Twister Math in the Flow event offers a solution. We begin by exploring the connection between art and math through a collection of works by artist Larry Poons. Then, we hit the math dance floor! Through fun games and activities, we dive into learning about the binary code and discovering the beauty of math! Next, we break into small groups for some hands-on activities. After a guided tour of the exhibition, we delve into programming our own digital applications using Scratch and Makey Makey. Whether it's a controller, a game, or an interactive work of art, the sky's the limit for our imagination!

We present Math in the Flow together with our course alumnus, Martin Hornykewycz, who also developed the learning kit with us!

With Martin Hornykewycz and the entire Creative Learning team

Martin Hornykewycz is 16 years old and currently attends a grammar school in Vienna's 3rd district. He has been working with our Creative Learning curator as part of the Creative Learning formats since summer 2017. He has already gained professional experience as a peer mentor and co-developer of the innovative data visualization of the Ludwig goes digital! project. In summer 2024, he completed an internship in the Collection and Mediation department. His expertise lies in the field of computer visualizations, and in his free time he devotes himself to robotics and tinkering with hardware components.

Lecture by Gerhard Rühm: Between Sound and Word: The Art of a Visionary

Gerhard Rühm, a central figure of the Austrian avant-garde, unites the disciplines of music, literature and visual art in a unique synthesis in his work. As a co-founder of the Vienna Group and one of the most important representatives of concrete poetry, he has had a lasting influence on Austria's cultural history. With a deep understanding of music - especially atonal compositions - and an experimental approach to language, Rühm revolutionized the traditional conception of art. In his lecture, he will provide insights into his artistic practice and show how he merges sound, rhythm and visual poetry into new forms of expression.

Be inspired by Gerhard Rühm's innovative approaches and then delve deeper into the practice in our scratch workshop: Here you can paint with your own voice and explore the boundaries of language and sound.

5.10–5.45 pm
Workshop: Loud with onomatopoeia: Gerhard Rühm 4.0

Workshop with art, the computer language Scratch and live visualization

In the spirit of concrete poetry and inspired by the visionary language artist Gerhard Rühm, we will break language down to its basic elements. We leave semantics and syntax behind us and focus entirely on the visual and acoustic power of the individual letters and sounds. In this creative process, we give these linguistic elements a new, unfamiliar meaning and tell a captivating story with just a few sounds. We then transfer our findings into the world of programming and create a digital work of art together - a painting with the voice that redefines the boundaries between language, sound and technology. Being loud is definitely encouraged, let's raise our voices together!
